In the Bible, we read, begining with Mathew 16: 13   When Jesus came into the coast of caesarea Phi-lip'-pi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the son of man am? 
14  And they said Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some, E-li'-as; and others, Jer-e-mi-as or one of the prophets
15  He saith unto them, but whom say ye that I am ?
16  And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the son of the living God.
17 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou Simon Bar-jo-na: for flesh and blood " (the natural mind) "hath not revealed it unto thee, but my father which is in heaven. In otherwords His Father which is in heaven had revealed this to him and he spoke the words as the spirit gave utterance. That is way Jesus called him blessed, it had nothing to do with the human or natural Peter.
  There is no way that flesh and blood ( the natural mind )can know Christ or can reveal truth ! It is only by the spirit of God that truth can be revealed. In other words you can not know Christ in the natural mind. You think you know Christ because you have read about him in the bible, or you have had a wonderfull experence in relation to what you read. (God lets his rain, fall on the just and on the unjust) you only know about the historical figure of the bible!   Unless you surrender you own understanding to God, and let God reveal the truth in a spiritual and real sense you will never know God or Truth!
God used this analogy of peter to give to the world how his kingdom would be built ! Not the rock of Peter, but the rock of revelation from god.  Later when Jesus began to reveal gods plan for him to be killed and raised on the third day; Peter thought he knew better  and fell short of God. as we read that he rebuked Jesus and Jesus called him Satan in the twenty-third verse and said get thee behind me , thou art an offence to me: for thou savourest not the things of God, but those that be of men. Peter had dropped back into his own understanding and was speaking out of his own mind;   The natural mind is enmity to God and is from the satanic nature and can not possible hold or reveal God's truth----Only the rock of revelation as it is given is how God will build His church !   I don't mean a thought you acquire and can retain and build Babylon with. When you do this you become a proselyte, and add to them daily/ what I am speeking of is a work of the spirit and can not be contained in the natural mind and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it,  because it is the mind of God.
God wants to direct his own work!  Except the Lord build the house , they labor in vain that build it. Ps: 127:1
Scriptures must be interpeted by the Holy Ghost ;  The scriptures were written by the spirit and only the spirit can interpet them .  this is the spirit of the scriptures;  that you will strive to know inwardly the truth, as it is known by the spirit, not in getting what we call knowledge. for it is not in the knowing, but in the striving ; that we grow and learn the supremence of God.  May the spirit of God in His devine will and forethought help us all to grow in him.
